The two candidates for mayor in Park City, incumbent Andy Beerman and City Councilor Nann Worel, joined the Park City Rotary Club for a candidate forum on Tuesday.

 

So far in the campaign for mayor of Park City, the candidates have been aligned on issues like climate policy, social equity, and affordable housing goals. However, there has been a sharp contrast in the style of leadership each candidate says they bring to the table.

Should Park City host another Winter Olympic games?  Candidates for Park City Mayor tackled that question at a debate Monday, hosted by KPCW, the Park Record, the Park City Chamber, and The Park City Community Foundation.  

Current City Council member Nann Worel said she was not in Park City for the 2002 Winter Olympics, and she’s hearing from residents who WERE in town at the time, that they’re not eager for the games to return.

With climate-dependent recreation being one of Park City’s major industries, the local climate activism group will host a debate for Park City mayoral and city council candidates this week.

The Wasatch Back chapter of the Citizens’ Climate Lobby is hosting the candidate forum on Thursday evening. It’ll run from 6 to 7:30 in the evening and will be held via Zoom.

Park City Chamber of Commerce, Park City Community Foundation, KPCW and the Park Record presents this debate from the Jim Santy Auditorium. This debate will feature candidates Tim Henney, Tana Toly, and Jeremy Rubell.This event will be streamed live onFacebook, and on air live on KPCW.


Heber City

After a public hearing to discuss topics including the city moderate income housing plan, the Heber City Planning Commission will consider allowing a new school site to an ongoing development in its meeting Tuesday.

 

  

It's seeking public comment on three topics: changes to the city’s moderate income housing plan, subdivision and zoning ordinance changes and the Highlands development.

In recent weeks, headlines have focused on Moab police officers, after their interaction with tourists Gabby Petito and her boyfriend Brian Laundrie shortly before her death, which has been ruled a homicide.

Summit County Sheriff’s Lt. Andrew Wright talked to KPCW about how deputies respond locally to what are often challenging situations.

A new sales tax will be on November ballots for Wasatch County voters. 

The RAP Tax is a local sales tax that would generate money that Heber City, Midway and the county could use for recreation, arts and parks.

It will only go into effect if Wasatch County voters vote in favor of it in the November 2 municipal election.

The new tax would add a tenth of a cent on the dollar to the current sales tax rate for the next 10 years. It would apply to all shopping, except most groceries.

After closing Friday due to weather, Guardsman Pass will remain closed today and into next week.

The Utah Department of Transportation said this morning it would keep it closed ahead of a winter storm in the forecast beginning Monday. There is no estimated reopening date, but it will depend on weather and safety conditions.

Guardsman Pass is a two-lane stretch of State Route 224 that runs from the Bonanza Flats trailhead near Park City to Big Cottonwood Road at the entrance of Brighton Resort.

Park City ended its popular Transit to Trails pilot program early on Friday weekend because of weather. 

 

A July experiment to gauge the public’s interest in a shuttle service from downtown Park City to several local trailheads proved to be incredibly popular.

The Utah Legislature’s Redistricting Committee made a stop in Summit County on Friday to gather input from residents as the committee redraw’s the state’s congressional, state legislative, and school board maps.

 

Friday night’s meeting at Ecker Hill Middle School attracted several dozen citizens curious about Utah’s once-a-decade redistricting process.
